New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.

“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
