First-choice Eleven

Dean Henderson Not a save to perform in the first half until tested by Arbër Hoxha’s curled attempt. His sliding tackle on an Albanian attacker showed sharp game intelligence. 6/10

The debutant Challenged against Albania’s primary attacker through their forward. Operated more centrally to begin with but moved out wide once Saka was introduced. 7/10

The defender Pushed up the pitch with the ball at his feet, a familiar role previously. On occasion lacked urgency when carrying play with the tactic abandoned at half-time. 6/10

The tall defender Always dangerous from dead balls, as always, could serve as a replacement for his teammate in the backline rather than his partner. One wayward distribution after the break nearly resulted in an opener from the visitors. 6

The young full-back One more assured performance from the youngster following his debut versus another side. Saka did not capitalize on the opportunity from a clever flick over the Albania defence. His position looks secure at this stage. Seven

Adam Wharton His maiden beginning in an England shirt. Slightly loose on the ball though his inswinging deliveries were a threat. A useful game manager available to the boss to have against sides that sit back. Booked after a reckless foul. Six

The midfielder Deliveries on corner kicks and set-plays were dangerous. Was given room to roam in left midfield but was in an offside position when the ball arrived in shooting positions. Given a deserved substitution on the hour mark. 6/10

The star midfielder Played in an advanced position out wide while also did plenty of defensive duties. Demonstrated flashes of quality but scuffed an effort high. Replaced in the closing stages by a teammate, his competition, after receiving a caution. 7/10

Jarrod Bowen Had the team's clearest opportunity before halftime, his effort smartly stopped from the Albanian keeper. As a teammate staying deep, he was forced to provide width down the right side although his balls from the touchline were inconsistent. Taken off late in the match. 6

The captain The match-winner scoring two more finishes in an England shirt. His first a trademark poacher’s finish while the second a superb header following a clever run from his marker. Now 32, he continues to improve and the side have every chance next summer with him leading the line. Eight

The attacker Struggled to get into the game from the left. Was presented with a good opening following a pass by Bellingham yet the keeper made the save. His replacement produced a bigger effect after coming on. 5/10
