A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

By the Numbers

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
