Why PSG Are Focusing On Homegrown Players to Protect Their European Title

Homegrown players were formerly a relatively rare sight on PSG starting lineups.

Until recent seasons, the team's QSI era was defined by high-profile signings from other clubs.

The Shift in Strategy

Several PSG's most notable academy products during those years, including Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, found themselves moving on before breaking through in the Parisian setup.

The team's turn towards French talent in recent seasons has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue lead last year's treble-winning campaign.

Developing Homegrown Talent

Currently, PSG are planning to go one further and build around their local prospects, a change that has been accelerated by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the unavailable stars, there have been as many as five academy graduates - each hailing from the French capital - in the starting lineup this season.

State-of-the-Art Training Facilities

The team's all-encompassing youth development center has been key to this approach.

In recent seasons, PSG moved out of the Camp des Loges to the recently constructed state-of-the-art PSG Campus.

The modern infrastructure, which were officially inaugurated a last year, host the men's and women's teams along with their development squads over a large area.

The complex features multiple training fields, housing for youth prospects, schooling infrastructure and even a produce area.

Long-term Planning

During an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the youth system's establishment, technical director Luis Campos stated that the team's future strategy were to involve "more and more players from the French capital" in the first team.

"The idea is to have talents in each development level who can advance up the academy," says Campos.

A clearer path from the youth system to the main roster can also relieve the team's dependence on the external signings, the technical director pointed out.

For Campos, "frequent shopping often doesn't create you a superior chef."

"The crucial aspect is to be progressing in the correct path, not to hoard prospects," he continues.

Youth Development

The former Monaco director also shared details of a meeting between Luis Enrique and the academy staff, in which the Spaniard established his "tactical approach" rather than imposing particular drills or tactical setups to follow.

The manager's arrival two seasons ago, Campos says, was notably favoured by "readiness to play young talents as soon as they're ready."

Emerging Talents

Facing Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who featured prominently and scored in PSG's surprising 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also involved in the victory over the Barcelona, while 17-year-old Mathis Jangeal was on the bench, having first appeared for the first team a short time earlier.

Mayulu, who scored the concluding goal in the continental decider victory over Inter in May, has been part of the early success stories of the new direction.

Versatile Performer

The emerging midfielder, primarily a midfield player, specifically credits his 50 first-team games to his versatility.

Since securing a place in each Ligue 1 fixture since the early season, Mayulu has been deployed in various roles, from right-back, to engine room, to attacking role.

Academy Leadership

Yohan Cabaye has been the head of the club's academy since 2024, having initially joined the academy structure following the end of his playing career.

The former France midfielder praises extensively Mayulu, emphasizing the way he recovered from injury several times in his youth career.

"During his early days in the youth system, he was finding it difficult to finish full seasons," Cabaye explains. "He possessed such resilience that he consistently returned, though."

Unique Player

Zaire-Emery, as the experienced midfielder describes him, is an unique situation.

"He cannot serve as an standard, if we did you'd have numerous teenagers approaching Luis Enrique's office," he comments.

Presently experiencing his fourth campaign in the senior squad, the young talent has been skippering the affected Parisians from an increasingly familiar right-back role.

Return to Form

After struggling through stretches of last season, the French international is rediscovering the explosive form that initially secured his place in the professional setup.

Having also returned to the Les Bleus squad in the past few weeks, the capital city-born explained his time with the development squad contributed to restoring his confidence.

"I've focused on myself, I persisted and maintained dedication," he pointed out before the fixture versus Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have gained advantages, with Zaire-Emery serving as the standard-bearer yet again for the latest academy products of Parisians.

Rival Interest

A essential component of optimizing the capital city prospects is fending off interest from other clubs.

Employing dedicated recruitment staff covering development leagues in the metropolitan area, PSG are looking to improve their presence on the rich source of prospects at their doorstep, from which their French and continental competitors have long been recruiting players.

Youth Success

When development league outcomes are a reliable guide, PSG will not be short of players to integrate in the years to come.

The under-19 side won the competition again this previous year and have excelled during the international tournaments, which has naturally drawn attention from the outside.

"We often have between multiple observers from French and foreign teams coming to our youth games," Cabaye explains.</
